Around here, Mother’s Day requires two rituals. Doting on mother’s and grilling. Actually the second is really an extension of the first. In the past grilling has mostly been the steaks, burgers, and dogs variety in an effort to feed everyone and settle down for some relaxing conversations and antics of children playing around us. OK, the antics are not always relaxing.
This year a few things came together and I decided to do a little early Mother’s Day grilling. The first thing that happened was the good folk over at KA-Ranch sent us some dry rubs and seasonings for evaluation. The second was some “Country Style” pork ribs I picked up. The third was simply perfect grilling weather.
I rubbed half the ribs with KA-Ranch “Trail Dust” seasoning and the other half with “Big Cow Creek” rub. I then slow cooked the ribs over charcoal for about an hour and a half, maybe a little longer. I also put in a few chucks of recently cut apple wood to produce that sweet smoky flavor that apple wood is so well known for.
The smell from the grill was nearly torturous as I sat there and closely guarded the grill from prying eyes and hands. I had a couple of helpers with the gathering of the grilling utensils and, of course, the ribs. We almost didn’t make it indoors before consuming the ribs. Once the sweet smoky aroma filled the house, there was no need to ring a dinner bell.
My recipe was uncomplicated and simple:
Rub Country Style Pork Ribs with KA-Ranch rub of choice.
Setup grill for indirect cooking/smoking.
Grill Ribs for 30 to 45 minutes.
Flip Ribs.
Add apple wood.
Continue to grill/smoke ribs for 30 to 45 minutes.
Flip ribs and add apple wood if required.
Grill for another 30 to 45 minutes or until done.
Last but not least, serve to hungry mouths waiting around your table.
Get out and grill,Robert
